Choosing Personal Supplements: Which Type Of Collagen Do You Need?

June 26, 2018 - customcollagen

As one of the most abundant compounds in the body, collagen is vital to forming the tissues that make up organs, bones and more.

Collagen supplements, when taken regularly, have been shown to provide numerous health benefits, including support for bone health, healthy joints, a healthy heart, a normal metabolism, and liver and kidney function. They’ve even been found to promote relaxation and restful sleep.

But before you start taking collagen, you’ll have to choose among the various types on the market. Use this info to help you choose whether you want type I, II or III, and whether you’ll get it from fish gelatin, beef collagen or eggshell membrane capsules.

Collagen Types

There are 28 types of collagen in the body. Out of these 28 types, the first three are the most abundant and the most readily available on the market. But what are they each responsible for?

  • Type I Collagen is the most abundant in the human body. It makes up 80 percent of the dermis layer of our skin and is thus considered to be the key building matrix protein which gives our skin its structure and firmness. Always look for collagen supplements that contain at least 90 percent of type I collagen if you want the collagen supplements to work for your skin.
  • Type II Collagen makes up your movable joints and is commonly used to treat joint aging and relieve arthritis pain.
  • Type III Collagen is the second most abundant collagen in human tissue. As we age, type III collagen is gradually replaced by type I collagen.

Sources of Collagen Peptides

There are four main sources of the collagen found in most common supplements: bovine (cow), chicken, porcine (pig) and marine (fish) collagen.

Beef Collagen

Made of the skin, bones and muscles of cows, bovine collagen is rich in type I and type III collagen. Beef collagen peptides are excellent for maintaining bone and gut health, healing wounds and promoting strong joints. They’re also a rich source of proline and glycine, both of which help reduce fatigue and even repair sun-damaged skin.

Chicken Collagen

Chicken collagen, a type II collagen, is loaded with joint-healthy chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate – both great for supporting your joints and maintaining healthy pH levels. This type of protein is also used to treat arthritis, back and neck pain, and even pain caused by surgery.  Try eggshell membrane capsules, which are made up of the shells and whites of eggs.

Pig Collagen

Like bovine collagen, porcine (pig) collagen (found in both type I and type III collagen) can normally be obtained at a lower cost and is commonly used in cosmetics. But keep in mind that porcine collagen is not considered as effective as fish collagen in raising overall body collagen levels.

Fish Collagen

Extracted from fish, marine collagen (type I) is the purest form of collagen on the market. Our body’s cells can easily absorb fish gelatin and use it to keep skin tight and wrinkle-free. Due to its digestibility, fish collagen is great if you have digestion issues or need to heal your gut. While marine collagen is more costly, it can be more effective because it’s absorbed by the body up to 1.5 times as easily as cheaper bovine and porcine collagen.
